Mother's Day the world over is such a big deal. Everyone is born to a mother, whatever the circumstance or outcome - happy or not. Without a mother there is no life - plain and simple.
Because it's such a big deal - there are bound to be strong opinions about it. Mother is a verb as well as a noun - honored by whatever mothers, the capacity to mother, or its equivalent.
There is mother as a physical person - biological or not, the one who raised us. There is the world view of mother - nurturer and nourisher, sustainer and supporter. There is also the cosmic mother alternative or alter ego - Mother Nature, Gaia, Source, the Universe as a whole.
When a baby is born we can comprehend the heroic labor it takes to keep one alive. Tending to this being constantly. The exhaustion of being at beck and call to one who can do nothing and demands everything,
We realize that whoever mothered us did all these things for us before we realized or remembered. Fed, washed, cleaned, clothed - cared for and given attention. Taught to develop and grow - however well or not. Espress and commune in relation to the world we learned to navigate in and through.
Given a thousand other things - over and over again. Endless hours and days - for years and years. Giving her all or all she has to give.
May you locate the ten thousand mothers that brought you into being and keep you going, no matter who and where you are. May you be the mother of uncounted possibilities and loves. ~ Rebecca Solnit.
