pre-birthday reflections

Before we know it another year has passed and a milestone birthday looms. It's time to reflect over the past year and start building the new one. What will I bring to this next decade of my life?

This past year has been eventful: trips to Italy and France, stepping up projects and making changes at work. I like to track my year through my notebooks. Finishing one notebook or planner and starting a fresh one is always exciting.

This year the most affecting change has been my repetitive strain injury which was mild but chronic. Doctors prescribed rest and gentle exercise: I can only draw for a few hours a day, spaced out in 40-minute increments, and no more heavy lifting at work.

With new limitations come new skills: I've been teaching myself to write with my left hand. I was surprised to find it easier to write in mirror script than the right way round. It makes me feel a bit like Leonardo da Vinci!

I also draw with my left hand, to loosen it up and maintain my skills while the dominant hand needs resting. Other comic artists do this too, with some fun results!

Travelling has also honed my skills in drawing and writing (I hope!). I've gotten more diligent about keeping journals - I find them an emotional and personal supplement to all the photos I take.

The Museums Association has a £50 annual membership that allows museum employees to see exhibitions all over the UK for free - I finally got myself one and indulged in a lot of visits, especially this summer.

From now on I want to make these visits more often, as regular a part of my art routine as my drawing.

New physical changes, new skills and new experiences...I can't wait for more wandering and wondering in the coming year!
