Penthouse view from Gaonnuri |
When we find someone and can keep them engaged for decades, our shared gastronomical delight grows exponentially with the years.
crazy hungry Asians |
Being Asian women who have since relocated to New York City has honed our palates and added surprising facets to our relationship.
Gaonnuri interior |
Our latest escapade was a work day lunch at Gaonnuri at the penthouse on 1250 Broadway and 30th in Koreatown.
It was a feast of the senses that lived up to their marketing blurb.

The name GAONNURI (gah-ohn-nu-ri) represents our placement in what we believe is the center of the world, both physically and figuratively. Located in the heart of New York City, a city that represents the intersection of the finest cuisines and eclectic cultures, GAONNURI seeks to gather people of all backgrounds to share in a traditional Korean dining experience.
Gaonnuri featured in Open Table |
The usual chaotic NYC construction on the ground floor had us temporarily detoured through the hotel entrance on 31st where a lobby host swiped us through a dedicated elevator to the top floor.
As soon as the doors opened into the restaurant lobby we entered an elegant pocket of hushed quiet where we were efficiently led to discreetly positioned tables by their hospitable staff.
our table view |
We had reserved a table by the window where the view was truly breath taking.
As soon as we opened our menu we knew we were in trouble. All the lunch menu choices were what our greedy bellies so desired.
scallion pancake |
japchae |
Finally after a short and frenzied discussion while sipping our warm barley tea, we settled for the japchae and scallions pancake for starters.

my steaming seafood bowl |
My friend chose the beef bibimbab and I had the seafood version. Generous portions had us stuffed in no time.

Where we had to return all too soon to our regular lives in the crush and grind of the cold streets down below.
Gaonnuri is now counted among one of the many joys we love about being in New York City.
