The best thing about the annual MassKara Festival is the attention and involvement it draws to Bacolod and Negros Occidental. More than the glitz and hype of all the other activities - it is the focus on local farmers and the highlight on freshly grown produce that we absolutely favor and support.
Farmers’ markets and food fairs are a fundamental part of the urban-rural interface. They continue to grow in popularity, mostly due to the awakened consumer interest in obtaining fresh products - specially produce directly from farms close by.

These allow consumers to have access to locally grown, farm-fresh produce, enable farmers to develop personal relationships with their customers, and cultivate consumer loyalty with the farmers who grow the produce.
Direct marketing of farm products through farmers’ markets and outlets contribute to significant income and direct sales. They also sustain Negros Island's agricultural growers and producers - bringing their products and innovations to more of us.

During this season, we have been enjoying browsing and shopping around the stalls and kiosks set up in Robininson's Negros Farmers Fair. Buying authentic and locally sourced Negrense products and produce - prepared and presented by the barangays of Negros Occidental.
Shopping at this food fair comes with some pretty great benefits.

Supporting local farmers strengthens the community and local economy. Farmers selling directly to consumers, receive the bulk of what is paid - instead of going to corporations for packaging, marketing and transportation. Its a valuable economic boost in these trying times - visited by the raging rains and flooding caused by typhoon Kristine.
Freshly picked, in season produce is at peak flavor and nutrition. Not only is buying locally an economic win for the community, but we benefit by getting to know our neighbors and eating fresher, healthier food. Win, win and nom nom nom!

The farmers food fair offers healthy eating recommendations - getting a variety from all five food groups. Including fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy (or dairy alternatives). The different booths had seasonal products and fresh healthy options. Especially native treats and specialties - sweet, salty or savory, all delicious and lovingly prepared for us.
Farmers recommended their favorite ways for preparing their products. Chatting with stall vendors and getting their best tips was a delightful addition. Asking questions and sharing ideas for best cooking methods and favorite recipes are extra helpful when buying something new and familiar.

We tried all the fruits and vegetables we were missing as well as new discoveries. What an adventure it was to taste more novel products not readily found at a local market - variety is definitely the spice of life with good reason!
Sunday is their last day for this food fair and wonder | wander | women are already looking forward to hunting down our next foraging adventure.
