You can say we arrived at such a state in an unnatural way. Being Filipino from the Visayan province of
Negros where sugar has been grown for centuries to supply national consumption and world trade.

Negros Occidental - our side of the island - has mastered the art of
burnt sugar delicacies. We take grand pride and are world-renowned and multi-awarded for them.
But even in our youth our love for sugared desserts and dried and fried foods - another specialty of living in a tropical coastal town known too for its abundant seafood - was tempered by childhood asthma.

As a young mother I had to educate myself in finding healthy alternatives that did not compromise our health and yet were delicious enough to win our loyalty as avowed gourmands and food lovers.

Then in maturity since we inherited endometriosis, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure on both sides of our families - not a great surprise given our island lifestyle and diet - we had to get creative about getting around these challenges and obstacles.

Our US cardiologist and keeper of our siblings health recommended the
Atkins diet. It's been around since 1958 and was promoted and made famous by Dr. Robert C. Atkins who wrote a book about it in 1972.

Yet it is classified as a fad diet because it is used mainly for weight loss. Demonized initially as unhealthy by mainstream health authority then, after more thorough studies it has since been shown to lead to more weight loss than low-fat diets, with greater improvements in blood sugar, HDL (the "good" cholesterol), triglycerides and other health markers.

Three water-soluble compounds [β-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate and acetone - known collectively as ketone bodies] are produced by the liver in otherwise healthy people. These can be starved or consumed by going on a very low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet. The Ketogenic diet works by producing a high level of ketone bodies in the blood (ketonemia) through an excess of fat and lack of carbohydrate.
