MAY feasting flavors & festivities

Only on our eighth day of May and wonder | wander | women have been celebrating each day with fun and festive feasts.

May 1 - May Day, Beltane, US Labor Day
May Day or workers day, pagan or anglicized, cultural or commercialized, historical or statutory - May 1 has symbolic significance for many of us. In the United States this signifies the end of spring break and the start of school.

May 2 - Holocaust Remembrance Day, National Day of Prayer

Yom HaShoah is observed as Israel's day of commemoration for the Holocaust and Jewish resistance in that period. Pope John Paul II organized the first World Day of Prayer for Peace in Assisi, Italy, on October 27, 1986. In all there were 160 religious leaders - representing 32 Christian religious organizations and 11 other non-Christian world religions - who spent the day together, fasting and praying to their God or gods.

May 3 - World Press Freedom Day

Today more than ever we need to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression

May 4 - Star Wars Day, Kentucky Derby

May the Force be with you this Fourth of May! Especially if you are gambling on the world's shortest and fastest horse race in the country.

May 5 - Cinco de Mayo, World Laughter Day

Cinco de Mayo is more popular in the United States than Mexico, celebrating Latin American culture. World Laughter Day was created in 1998 by Dr. Madan Kataria, founder of the worldwide Laughter Yoga movement. Fake it til you make it?

May 6 - Start of Ramadan, Nurses' Day & Week

Muslims worldwide observe Ramadan as a month of fasting (sawm) to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad. Nurses' Week is a week long celebration that culminates on the birthday of Florence Nightingale on May 12. As of 1998, May 8 was also designated as annual National Student Nurses' Day

May 7 - Teachers' Day & Week

National Teachers' Day is on Tuesday during Teacher Appreciation Week, which takes place in the first full week of May. We give thanks to this creative pool of gifted and generous sound healing mentors at New York Open Center.

May 8 - No Socks Day, Victory in Europe Day

To welcome the warming weather we let our feet fly free of our socks on this day. The bigger celebration on this day is VE Day - celebrating the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender of its armed forces on the 8th of May, 1945.
