The great joy of living in a big city is what writer Julia Cameron calls the 'art date': a day of wandering and gathering inspiration. After a glorious month of running around New York, I felt like I hadn't gone on a 'date' with my own adopted city in a while.

I turned 39 this year. It was a glorious warm day; a good time to revisit my favourite part of the city, the iconic South Bank of the Thames.
Picasso was on at the Tate Modern: what a great exhibition for an art date! The prolific artist spent a single year of his life reinventing himself in a whole new style from the pure Cubism and jagged modernism that had gone before.

It's becoming a birthday tradition to have my 'art friend' Jamie along on these visits, and this year we were able to start a new tradition: bringing her new son along to absorb culture and conversation!
Opinions differ on what a less-than-year-old absorbs, but we loved our new custom and hope it continues for many more years.

We did a double bill this year: the Picasso and the history of photography retrospective The Shape of Light, an amazing show with works by Alfred Stieglitz, Man Ray, Edward Ruscha and Lou Bonian.

We spent the rest of the day by the river: walking, eating, talking, and looking - some of my favourite things to do!
To share a beautiful city with a like-minded friend, to witness and be included in the ever-changing growth of a new person...it's something I am eternally grateful for.
Moving into the 40th year of my own life, I'm excited to experience and share more beauty, more perfect days. Happy birthday to me!
